Advances in Printed Electronics

Printed and organic electronics, an emerging clean-tech electronics technology leveraging the solution d functional materials and optimized high-throughput printing process, is expected to offer significantly low manufacturing cost, salient device structural characteristics, and environmental benefits. It would open up potential markets where the traditional silicon d electronics are incapable of responding to.
Current key activities are to address the present technology and engineering gaps in functional materials, devices and processes to enable the lab-to-fab transition through the printed and organic electronics value chain, i.e. from high performance functional material development (synthesis and scale-up), process engineering (for solution-processable material systems and product specifications), to technology demonstration (system integration for prototyping).
This presentation will summarize the recent advancements in solution processable functional materials systems, device physics, and fabrication techniques. This technology complements conventional technologies by offering low-cost and large-area attributes that are highly desirable for ubiquitous sensing electronics, energy harvesting and storage, and flexible displays.
Jie Zhang received the B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Chongqing University (China), and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago (USA). She is Vice President and R&D Director of Changzhou Institute of Printed Electronics Industry Pte Lid. The Institute is focused on printed electronics value chain platform development for PE technology commercialization. Dr Zhang was a Senior Scientist and Program Manager of the Institute of Material Research and Engineering at A*STAR in Singapore. She manages PV, Printed Electronics, and Advanced Energy Storage programs to develop advance material system, device fabrication and characterization, and prototype capabilities. Previously at Motorola, she was Principal Staff Engineer and managed core technology group for the large area electronics technology and commercialization. She led the team fabricated the world’s first all printed logical circuits in 2004 and produced the first all-printed active matrix flexible display module using conventional graphic arts printing technologies in 2008. She also has extended experience in advanced microelectronics package process and reliability evaluation for wireless communication devices.
Dr. Zhang has received 19 US patents and published over 70 peer-review papers in the SCI journals. She has co-edited the first book of Printed Organic and Molecular Electronics. She is actively organizing printed electronics conferences and workshops, and frequently been invited to present at international conferences.
