BOF Steelmaking – Advanced Understanding and Dynamic Modelling

Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) Steelmaking is currently a dominant steelmaking process, accounting for over 70% of world crude steel production. The steel community has been conducting significant research and development to increase the productivity, improve the process control and reduce the environmental impact of the BOF steelmaking process. The speaker will introduce his research experience in last 10 years, in collaboration with world leaders, on BOF steelmaking – fluxing behaviour, in-situ neutron observation of BOF slags at steelmaking temperatures, emulsification phenomena, dynamic modelling, and energy and materials recovery in steelmaking slags.
Dr Zushu Li is a Principal Research Fellow and an EPSRC Fellow in Manufacturing at WMG, the University of Warwick, UK. He leads the research in sustainable steel manufacturing, focusing on alternative ironmaking processes, clean steel technologies, and energy and materials recovery and recycling. He has extensive industrial experience in process innovation for product development and in-depth understanding of the industry. Prior to joining the Advanced Steel Research Centre at WMG in April 2016, he was a Principal Scientist at Tata Steel R&D (UK), where he worked for nearly 10 years. Previously he worked at Imperial College London (UK), Kyushu Institute of Technology (Japan) and Chongqing University (China). He received his PhD degree in Metallurgy from Chongqing University, China.
