X-ray imaging at Synchrotron Radiation facility, SPring-8

“SPring-8” is one of the largest third generation synchrotron radiation facilities in the world, which provides the powerful synchrotron radiation. A third-generation synchrotron radiation facility is a facility designed especially for installing as many insertion devices as possible in the storage ring. Those devices provide high brilliant X-rays to beamlines. There are 57 beamlines in SPring-8. 26 of them are public beamline which accept general proposal from all over the world.

 A few beamlines are operated as X-ray imaging beamline. Representative examples are BL20XU, BL20B2 and BL47XU; (1). BL20XU: Medium length BL (245m), hybrid undulator light source, high coherence at end station. (2). BL20B2: Medium length BL (215m), bending magnet light source, large beam size (300mm x 20mm); (3). BL47XU: normal length BL (53m), SPring-8 standard undulator light source, high flux density (1.0E+14 photon/s/mm2).

In-situ X-ray micro-tomography, 2D live-imaging ( l alloy, volcanic phenomena) and test study of X-ray optics are done with a micrometer order spatial resolution at BL20XU. 3D-XRD measurements are also available. In BL20B2, real-time imaging of  l crystal growth is going with the large beam. BL47XU is used for nano-imaging with FZP optics. The nano-imaging system has been used for analyze the small features of aluminum alloy (Figure*).

主讲人简介:

Uesugi Kentaro, Associate Chief Scientist working in Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute (JASRI / SPring-8), which is affiliated with RIKEN (日本理化研究所). His research fields are X-ray micro-tomography with synchrotron radiation, high spatial resolution X-ray image detector, and so on. He also worked in the Japanese Society for Synchrotron Radiation Research Committee and the Japanese Society of Microscopy Committee. He worked on the application of the synchrotron radiation in biology and materials and published 100+ research papers.
